We reached the riverbank, and our moran guide directed us to a shallow spot to cross. The camel gave a grunt and sloshed through, raising a gentle spray of water that was welcome relief under the relentless Kenya sun.
After yesterday's walk, it feels good to set out on camel back. As we travel through the bush of the Northern Frontier, our Extreme Adventures guide and our local guide, a nomadic moran (warrior), raise their hands, signaling us to stop and be still. Our moran, a tall, slim man wearing leather sandals, slips off his camel and kneels to get a closer look at the tracks on the ground. Cheetah. Two or three, he thinks. He reaches for his binoculars and points to the rocks ahead to our left. We move slowly for maybe 20 feet and stop, watching. A rustle makes us turn. Two gazelle dash from the brush. A cheetah seems to fly from behind the rocks, followed by another. There is a thrashing sound and then silence. We slowly move on to see the cheetah dragging one of the gazelle back to the rocks.
