I hoped to see the "Big Five" during my time at Singita Boulders, but I wasn't prepared for the herd of buffalo - several hundred - I see grazing not far from the lodge. The Sand River constantly draws many elephant families, as well as a lion pride full of scampering cubs. We even spot three leopards sharing their kill in a tree and a rhino and calf under the shade of an acacia. It is such a privilege to have a front seat to the circle of life.
On our first day out, we drive through the reserve and follow a path along the Sand River. Not far ahead there is a stand-off between a young lioness and a gazelle. Their eyes meet at the same moment. The lioness crouches down, but the gazelle seems frozen. Our vehicle stops, and we are almost afraid to breathe. In a split second, the gazelle takes off, the lioness pursuing, gaining ground and intent on bringing home dinner.
